My Grandmother was an exceptional baker. There was always some tasty treat being created in her kitchen, using local ingredients, fruit from the garden, and always a big pot of tea on the go.
One of my favourites, amongst others, was her excellent Victoria Sponge Sandwich, a staple in their house, and the perfect addition to a huge cup of tea for a typical English late afternoon supper.
She would bake, wireless blaring out various songs of the hour, the beaded kitchen curtain tapping gently in the breeze, as my Grandfather hopped over the garden fence, back from work on the farm for his midday dinner. The kitchen was always adorned with a vase of freshly cut flowers from the garden, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. My happy place and definitely my happy meal all rolled into one.
