The bear in this illustration is Grazer, an Alaskan brown bear, who won a prize. She was crowned the Fattest Bear in 2023. Before you start thinking this is some body image shaming post, this contest is about survival for bears, because for them weight gain will ensure a healthy hibernation. The Katmai National Park and Preserve holds this contest every year. They track the bears at the beginning of the season when they are lean and very hungry, and follow them as they bulk up in preparation for hibernation. The bears almost double their weight! Of course I've been following this contest since it began a few years ago because bear love is real for me. I think maybe Winnie the Pooh and Little Bear are to blame.
