Dontonbori is an area in Osaka City, Japan. Food is a big part in Osakan culture as they were looked down upon in feudal Japan as they were a city of merchants. As a result the people of Osaka was forbidden to spend on finer items such as cloths, shoes, and jewelry. As a result, they spent all their food on food and entertainment, hence the birth of kuidaore, "to ruin oneself by extravagance in food."
